Yes we used liner in this pond. It was 45 mil EPDM rubber. We then stacked the verticals with granite rock and used mortar to secure everything because the pond walls are three to four foot deep.

i am think of 2.5 feet in the waterfall end and stepping it down to aroung 4 feet. the ground is frozen solid up here in canada right now. so i am just trying to design something right now...getting rid of the preformed pond that i have now and going bigger

Thanks for the compliment. The rock work in this pond was important because of the depth of the pond. The video in this pond is 4 feet deep and the walls are almost vertical. We needed the rock and mortar work to provide support to the walls. How deep do you plan on going? If you excavate the pond walls a little differently you can go without the stone in the pond.

Well, i am no expert like ThePondDigger but why not get a quality pool heater, i got one in my pond! You can still feed your fish in winter and take a swim with them too! They grow really really fast too! You should get one!

Well, shipping out of American can get a bit spendy. I'll gladly ship you free some water treatment and fish food samples if you pay for the shipping to the Great White North. 5' deep is a great depth for a koi pond but not absolutely necessary. If your winters are harsh like that of Michigan and Minnesota, I can tell you there are many ponds that do fine and there are many that are not fine over winter. It's a detailed topic and subjective to many variables. The Pond Digger

I live in the great white north , Canada so I guess I'm out of luck for the free t-shirt. I plan on having half of my pond 2'deep and the other half 5' deep. I will have an aerator running so the top doesn't freeze right over. Do you think I need to go that deep for the Koi ? Also , koi should be able to live through tough Canadian winters if the water doesn't freeze right over , eh?

This is a small (90 gal.) pond in my flower garden. It was built for the turtle who outgrew her indoor tank. Rosebud the turtle is a Texas Red Eared Slider. She shares the space with four comet goldfish. No, the turtle dosen't try to eat the fish. I feed them a commercialy prepared food daily.

Yes, she'd bask out on the rocks all the time. Last spring however she climbed the fence and was never seen again.:( We're pretty sure she made it to a nearby swamp and is still living there, happily everafter.:) Thanks for watching, merry Chriatmas!

That's great! I love my turtles and they make it through the winters just fine. They can take pretty cold weather as long as the pond dosen't freeze completely. They will hibernate at the bottom until it gets warm enough to comemback out. Thanks for watching!

I have some red ears and yellow belly terrapins in my pond. I live in the North of England and although winters are pretty cold the terrapins re-appear in the spring looking good as new. I wouldn't mind living in a slightly warmer climate like yours - I only really see my terrapins and fish for about half of the year. Check out my pond on my channel.

Sorry for taking so long to answer, just getting to this one.:) Anyway, no mechanical filter, just natural, biological filtration through the plant roots in the waterfall. I do weekly water changes as well. Thanks for watching and for asking.:)

Hello, my apologies for ts]aking so long to reply. We are along the northern Gulf of Mexico, north of Mobile, Al. The winters in the UK may be too cold for tropical fish, but koi and goldfish are coldwater fish and can survive as long as the pond doesn't freeze completely through. Thanks for watching!

They will freeze here too, but good news! There are many species that can survive a harsh winter as long as it dosn't freeze completely. But it might do so there in the UK. If you make it deep enough you could put in some koi and goldfish, they are coldwater fish and may do well in a deep pond.;)

A "homemade" biological filter. I have plants growing in a waterfall that in turn filters the water, somewhat. Plus I still do a regular water change if we have no rain to do it naturally.
