A snowstorm on the morning of Jan 16th 2007 left about 3-4 inches of snow and ice on the ground in Portland, Oregon. This is what happens to people with too much confidence in their 4WD and zero experience driving on icy snow.
Video was taken around SW Salmon and 20th Avenue, which is pretty steep (to be fair).

I agree. It's rare for Portland to get these kinds of snow storms. Most people that live in Portland equip their car to handle heavy rain. (Our typical weather) most of the cars that are able to handle snow / ice are owned by businesses. i.e. taxi cabs, tri-met. Very few people own tire chains or something to help with the loss of traction. I've been living in Portland my entire life and i've only seen one snow storm like this. But, that was 5+ years ago.

just FYI, i havent "recently" moved to oregon. i live on the other side of the mountain where we actually get snow. what im trying to say is the reason that there are scenes like this in poortland when it does snow is because they dont know how to deal with it. they havent had to deal with it much, and the 1 or 2 times it happens. stuff like this happens. yet over here in sisters, we get along just fine. why? because we have to deal with it. so people either deal, or get out.

I was one of the members of the samba marching band, Lions of Batucada, who answered the call of our Director, Brian Davis, to go downtown to celebrate that night.... but we never expected anything like this! We had just stopped playing (after an hour of parading) when instantaneously, two girls started singing the Star Spangled Banner, and were soon joined by everyone within earshot. Portland is the most bike-friendly large american city. Cities like Davis and Boulder are super friendly to bikes, but they are small cities. Implementing and building bike infrastructure is quite a bit different in a larger city.

I agree we should regulate. Tickets can and should be given for extreme situations. They are in many cases. The speed limit part though...let's be realistic. Middle lane is the safest option under many circumstances and only holds you back a few seconds. Not a big deal. People need to slow down a little anyway (clearly) Lighting should be mandatory front and rear at dusk and riders should be ticketed. I NEVER go without a light on in dark.I cannot see people on he road and I am on a bike!

Sad. Not everyone disobeys the laws. Trying to make it cost more to ride will not benefit anyone. It will cost tax payers more $ to create a mandatory permit...keep in mind that this would mean hiring people to run this operation, regulation, etc. Not cheap...you will not reap benies. Bicycling does not effect the air, roads, noise levels, and costs pennies on the dollar to implement and maintain the infrastructure for compared to the car that we all pay for dearly. Reward them.

the big picture is bikes are a great way to conserve energy and reduce mass transit. Alot of them do follow the laws and alot dont. On my commute to work at 9:00pm when the sun is not up, its hard to see them. Many dont have good lighting if at all. In shadows you can barely see them as they ride in the middle lane. Your not a car! If you want to "share" the roads, go the speed limit, stop at signs, and pay for your accidents. A biker hit one of my taxi drivers doors yesterday and then took off.

I truly do see a lot of bikers riding around to and from work, but Portland really doesn't have that great of bike paths and lanes. I've been to Colorado and Idaho and they by far have better lanes, paths and even parks for cycling, mountain biking, bmx.So I'm not sure how they came up with this idea that Portland is bike city. Trust me I bike and I've biked a lot of places.

This is great...how about enforcing a permit and cyclist insurance for the bikers. What this report doesn't tell is that these bikers do not obey the laws of the road and blow through red lights ALL THE TIME!! Something needs to be done to put some accountability on the biker.

to be in the balcony of the schnitz sucks for anything except to 'watch' a symphony. the keller is better for a band like AF...the balcony isn't so huge. the crystal was a great show. at least from this fans perspective. it may have been different from the first 20 rows on the floor of the shitz, but not in the balcony. seats at a rock concert=sux

honestly, the vid was shot from the balcony of the schnitzer concert hall...affectionately known at the shitz. people sitting up there are pretty far away and dont' always feel a part of the concert-especially during the quieter songs. the previous time they played portland it was much better venue. if you listen to the boots from this show - it's much quieter during this song.

There were elements from a grand minority of the crowd who were doing that all night. Quite annoying. You can also hear good people shushing them if you listen closely. It would have been better if they punched him repeatedly in the face. I was also at the Electric Park show. Felt that the Portland one was much more powerful because it was the first time ever. But the Lehi version was much more beautiful when done in complete audience silence. E

That's why when you live in a place like that your suppose to carry tire chains in your car/truck and know how to put them on. It's a law that when I came out there in the winter in my big rig I had to carry chains or I would get a ticket if I was checked. I loved Portland. It's my home town. However, the transp resources have been horribly managed for 20 years. Too much $ was diverted to low ROI projects like this. 90% folks still commute in cars, even in PDX. It's time we stopped denying it. How much fuel has been wasted all these years due to congestion at i5 S. at Delta Park? Or I5 exit north to 84 E? Or in pm gridlock on 26 E. at 185th, and on and on... We need to make smarter use of our $ and fix the glaring transp problems first.
